Japanase Consumer Electronics giant Casio has released the world’s first 12.1 megapixel compact digital camera. The newest addition to the Casio digital camera family is called Exilim Zoom EX-Z1200 and its resolution is the highest available in any compact digital camera. In 2006 the company released the predecessor to the EX-Z1200, the Exilim Zoom EX-Z1000; back then the first compact digital camera to deliver a 10-megapixel resolution.
The EX-Z1200 also features an 2.8in screen plus anti-shake technology to help prevent blurry shots owing to shaky hands or poor focusing. For that the camera automatically analyses the velocity and vector of a moving subject and sets the most appropriate ISO sensitivity and shutter speed.

The big question here is who actually needs 12 Megapixels from a digital compact camera? Besides showing off before friends with a large Megapixel count, there really is no point. Small compact cameras such as Casio’s newest Elixim are equipped with small and cheap sensors that produce low quality- pixels and inexpensive crappy little lense. Only in the professional photo environment it makes sense to equip a $2000 digital SLR (DSLR) with 12-Megapixel chips since these are high-quality sensors and the DSLR’s can be used with interchangable pro lenses covering all ranges of professional photo productions. The other problem with 12 Megapixel shapshots: The file sizes are gigantic, a standard compressed Jpeg shot with a 12 Megapixel resolution can easliy take 4 Megabytes of memory space on your disk drive. And a photo file this large needs a lot of precessor power to be edited with photo editing software such as Photoshop or iPhoto.
Anyway, for those of you who still think you need this latest little Japanese pixelmonster: The EX-Z1200 should be available later this month and is expected to retail for around $400.
