We all remember the movie, Predator. The alien from outer space reading infrared signatures of Arnold Schwarzenegger; infra-red, aah that part of optical science used in a variety of scientific fields, from heat seeking missiles to track target to weather forecasting and even for making porn, for example, Paris Hilton.
Carl Zeiss, the famous lens maker from Germany, popularly associated with Nokia camera phones and Sony cameras, is now developing its infrared optics department for civilian use. By that I am talking about the latest Planar T 85mm f/1.4 and Distagon 25mm f/2.8 ZF-IR lenses, for those experimental photographers who are cutting the edges of photography by going beyond the visible spectrum. The lenses are still an expensive technology for the picnic and vacation photography people with costs in the range of a grand. We have seen and been amazed by the IR photography of the Hubble telescope and many discoveries have been credited to the Infra-Red in medicine. As they say that a picture says a thousand words, it’s time to practice another kind of literature, Infra Red.
